Higher Certificate: I.T. (Database Development)


This information and technology (ICT) programme is created in line with Belgium Campus’s mission to train young people to understand, use and apply ICT effectively, efficiently and in ethical ways, leading to gainful employment.


The programme provides a broad perspective on the nature of technology, how to use and apply a variety of technologies, and the impact that ICT has on self and society. Students are encouraged to cope with the complexities, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of technologies in their lives and workplaces.


Successful completion of the programme not only provides the students with essential knowledge and skills, but also leads to the award of a Higher Certificate: Information Technology (Systems Development) qualification. This programme and the associated qualification are aligned with the MICT SETA-listed qualification framework, the National Certificate: Information Technology (Systems Development), listed by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) as qualification 71850.


This programme defines the following objectives:

Provide practical training in solving operational business problems using Information Technology, considering systems hardware, networking, security and database components.


Teach the details of and provide practical experience in the designing, development, testing and documentation of software solutions, including object-oriented programming, used in today’s business environment.


Equip students with the necessary soft skills, social attributes and attitudes to function successfully as young professionals in the business world.

Enable students who complete the programme successfully to enter higher education in the field of information and communication technology (ICT).


Successful completion of this programme yields the exit level outcomes described below.

Scope of knowledge

The student demonstrates an informed understanding of the core areas of PC hardware, networking, security and database management systems.

Method and procedure

The student demonstrates the ability to select and apply standard methods, procedures and techniques in creating software solutions that address operational business problems. Plan and manage the implementation process within well defined, familiar and supported environment.


The student demonstrates the ability to use the problem solving methodology to identify, evaluate and solve common problems ethically within a familiar context, and the ability to adjust an application of a common solution to meet the needs of small changes in the problem or operating context (incremental innovation).

Producing and communicating information

The student demonstrates the ability to communicate and present information reliably, accurately and coherently, using conventions appropriate to the context, in written and oral form or in practical demonstrations, including an understanding of and respect for conventions around intellectual property, copyright and plagiarism.


The student demonstrates the ability to account for his or her actions, to work effectively with and respect others, take supervisory.

Further Study Opportunities

Successful completion of this programme yields the exit level outcomes described below.

Upon completion of the Higher Certificate: Information Technology (NQF level 6) in Database Development, the student can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning from Belgium Campus iTversity in order to continue his/her studies at Belgium Campus in one of the other programmes offered by the institution.
