Is a web development course right for you?
It is virtually impossible to imagine the world today without the online infrastructure provided by the Internet and its supporting systems. Websites and intranets provide us with information, entertainment, and connections and enable us to complete transactions and execute certain functions… The list goes on. Modern life is inextricably linked to this functionality. Maintaining and expanding on this digital online landscape is an ongoing concern – and one that thus offers a lucrative career path with excellent employment opportunities. A web development course is your gateway to enter this field of expertise.
What is web development?
The term refers to the work involved in developing and building a website, excluding its design. While there are professionals who specialise in the design aspect, a web development course focuses on the coding and programming that enables the functionality of websites. The course gives you the ability to identify challenges and functional needs and to apply your creativity as well as the coding skills you have acquired to create solutions.
What can you do upon successful completion of a web development course?
If it is specifically web development that you are interested in, the obvious choice is to become a web developer. However, it is also worth noting that the relevant course is not exclusively focused on web development. You would be best advised to consider a diploma or degree in information technology with a specialisation in software development. Upon successful completion of your course, you will possess a mix of business and technical skills, which could allow you to also consider a career as a game developer, programmer, or database developer, among others.
What acceptance criteria need to be met by those wanting to study a course in web development?
Acceptance criteria may differ from one institution to the next. It also depends on the NQF level of the study programme you are interested in – for example, whether you are opting for a diploma or a degree. However, the basic requirements that you can expect to have to meet include the following:
- A National Senior Certificate certified by Umalusi. This is what most of us know as matric.
- Foreign students will be required to provide an equivalent foreign qualification which has been converted by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- To have passed Maths with a minimum of 50%.
- Those who took Maths Literacy as a subject may be required to first pass an introductory maths module.
- To have passed English with a minimum of 50%. Foreign students are required to produce their SAQA converted qualification listing English as a subject or complete an English proficiency test.
It is also important to note that Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) applies in many cases.
